Lol, reminds me of when my father needed a website for his company. He phones me up and asks if I can do one. My response was I'm not that good of a designer and I didn't really have the time. So a few days later he tells me he found someone who can do it for $50/page. I thought thats a reasonable price as it comes with free updates and modifications for a year.

Then he gives me the designers website. It was a page with a blue background, the only graphic he had on the page was a line dividing the navigation from the content. The content itself was done in all sorts of colors, the best part was the parts of text colored blue, yes, the same color as the background. The portfolio was just as horrific with wierd breaks in paragraphs, text you colored so you could barely see, horrific spelling (not that I'm that great a speller but there are such things as spell checks). The first website I ever made was better then his entire portfolio. I honestly do not know how people can make any money off designs that awful.

It's sad but true that companies and freelancers like this exist, I myself am a living example and I am truly shamed

Ive seen plenty of these, and funnily most of them are actually professionaly registered companies!
Of course theres also the big guns that make the professiaonl sites, such as Ceoncex and the likes, who charge a fair bit more then 50 a page i imagine

You have to wonder who designed Yahoo And how they get away with it.

Actually if you take a better look, it is done with Front Page.
I notice that the critiques are coming from people who at best have a 'Coming Soon page'? I would love to critique your work, if you have any.

The website work we do is a tiny sideline, mostly as a result of being asked to do something specific for people we know. E.g. http://bmartinpromotions.com which is a chatty/wordy type site tailored to the mostly 'oldies' attending that show. Very effective at increasing attendance by >30% over two years. We know it is not 'cool' , trendy etc. but it is not always cool, Flash, etc. that works or what it takes to succeed on a site.

'Know your audience', satisfy your customer, not your critics.
You might want to peruse http://dino308gt4.com as well. Simple, to the point and effective in serving that community. Nothing cool there either except the car. But is works very well for those who need the information provided. Avg of 50-70 hits per day for a small niche topic.
