CSS compliments HTML, so there's no way it could take it over.

I find both tables and CSS to be great tools in design. I am sure anyone could look at my skills and poke holes in it but, I believe tables and CSS are both needed when designing.

What is really ironic is this discussion is taking place on a site that has about 80 tables per page. This brings up the idea of function and feel of a site. Many situations CSS would look nicer but, tables function better.

An example of functionality is this content I am writing will be placed in a table. No need to have a person or complex code decide how to work with the content, just place it in a table and forget it.

And remember, do not like what I have written? Well, if you reply your option is going into a table that makes my point.

Hmm seems a lot of people disapprove of using tables for layouts. I will proudly say (no matter what anyone has their opinion about it) I code 50/50. Some designs I will use DIV's, others I will use tables. To me it all matters how I can get it to work the best, fastest and most professionally done to a clients / scripts needs.

Example: Client wants a simple blog design coded. 85% chance I'll use CSS unless the design can be done faster with tables. Another client wants a vB skin, I'll use 98% tables as that's what works best for the vB software.

If I'm considered a bad coder for using tables, that's fine. But I can assure you the work I do will always look great and work just as good as DIV's. I've sold numerous layouts here coded with tables, yes some were rush-coded, but there were a few that I took the time to keep the code clean as possible.

If you mark-up content as a table, you're making a claim about what kind of content it is (you're labelling it as tabular data). If you use a table-based layout, you're falsely claiming that your entire site consists of tabular data.

A question for those who still use tables for layout: Is it that you don't care about accurate mark-up, or that you think there are practical problems that justify the use of inaccurate mark-up?

The only two places you might consider layout tables 'necessary' in coding for vB is variable width navigation items and annoying tcats.
