Old  Web design, but is it art?

Who thinks web design is a form of art?

Although we're not using paint brushes and pallets I do feel that what we do, in photoshop or notepad is definitly something very creative.

Whilst it's easier to create good looking web sites than it is to paint a decent picture I do find a common link between the two. People who are naturally talented and have a passion for drawing, sketching, painting etc have a higher understanding of what it takes to create a great web design.

Just think about the enourmous amount of designers flogging their templates for $25 on forums, do you think they're actually talented on paper? Do you think they're doing this because they "love" it? They're doing it because they think it's easy and it will make them a quick buck.

The people who stand out are those who appreciate what they do is more than just for commercial purposes and it's for this reason I believe web design is something we can class as an art form.

What's your take on this?

Design is an art form, but it's an art form with a common goal or a complexed purpose. It's art to achieve a reaction, or fulfill a plan or pattern of events.

That's my take on it anyway

I agree with your Robson. Web design is an art, as is architecturing a building. We build and create products the display our own style and express our artistic abilities. I agree with the quick buck as well. People who make templates for $25 think its a quick buck. What I do is take time to put down something I really can be proud of and something that expresses a little of me while I'm at it.

Web design as always been an art to me, you create something new pixel by pixel from a blank canvas until final result, using creativity and artistic sense. Those who maybe aren't "artists" are the ones as Robson mentionned selling their layouts for $10 trying to make a quick buck, who just don't innovate much when designing, always doing the samething.

Art is whatever you make of it, if a pile of bricks with sand on top of them is art then surely a web design must also be classed as another form of art?

design is art. And everything is design to someone and not to some other. Some webdesign I would not descripe as art. But really it is art I just don't like it

What you do in photoshop is an art. What you do in notepad is not an art.

Sorry to post twice in a row but I disagree with that statement. Give me a paint brush and I will paint you a picture. Give me photoshop, a mouse and a keyboard and I don't know where to begin.

The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium.

That is one of the definitions given by dictionary.com for art.

The abilitie to arrange sounds, images to create beauty. I conclude therefore webdesign is an art
