that's exactly what a simple design is, hence my hatred for CSS only websites -- means no image(pure css/html colouring) -- therefore yes. what's left to discuss?

Clearly "good looking" is in the eye of the end user, but YES, you can create completely imageless designs that are still great designs:

http://www.francey.org/preview.php?template=colour
http://www.francey.org/preview.php?template=lane
http://www.francey.org/preview.php?template=rev9

There are more, but I don't have time to find them now...

You can make lots with CSS (rounded corners, buttons, bg images) if you really work at it

CSS is cool. I always find new ways of doing things, like turning a <p> tag into an image. 0.o

Useless, but hey.!

you can do a ton with CSS, however, unless youre working with a client who needs a handicap accessible website, i see no reason to bypass images all together...

its a visual medium... why limit yourself "just because"

You can actually create simple graphics with CSS, so it is possibe to make effects that you would do with graphics in CSS.

http://www.s7u.co.uk has some good examples of things you can do with pure css and html.

Very impressive indeed! I like the ocean design, is that pure css? Obviously some of the graphics leave a little to be desired, but it's amazing to think that can be created with pure code. Some of the sites i've browsed from this thread are incredible!

Stu's site is not only awsome, but one of the most informative sources for CSS design - really good!

This site is crap in IE but great in FF. It is pure valid CSS and HTML. No DHTML or Javascript.
