My time has been shorter here compared to Dan.
But I must say, the community is really good.

If what drives you mad is the lack of MARKET there's in here, that's kinda lame.
Not getting gigs and stuff.

I love this forum because when it comes to a doubt, I know I'll probably get it clear in here, there's a lot of good people willing to share their knowledge.

My two cents.

Looks like a typical Reddit/Digg like site with people ranking up the links/stories. This concept has been around the web forever and it has its own set of problems (those that spam these sites by ranking up certain material up).
These sites do well to filter spam. Where Digg failed is they began allowing paid posts to overtake top positions, like you're doing now in the marketplace now.

I can potentially see how it could be interesting for the discussions part of the community.
Are you referring to replies being structured by quality as opposed to date? Or the voting system. Either way both are huge improvements to vBulletin's IA.

However, you have not address the issues of data/membership migration and integration of other services like the marketplace, blog and other apps that we might bring forward.
Port the data over. It's just tables. The only major problem you will encounter is password hashing - vBulletin will probably go anal if you rip their code. I'm no lawyer.

In truth you're not porting that much. I'd guess you're losing 50% of the db as most of it is unneeded bloat-ware. Users, threads, and comments. That's all you need.

Are there any scripts that would actually tie this concept into an actual community with ability to edit posts, quote on replies, attach items, etc - forum-style? Developing a custom application for this purpose, thus reinventing the wheel is out of the question.
There are dozens of frameworks and CMS's. Roll with one.

I may be in the minority but I would rather stick with a standard forum system. Not a fan of these reddit, lightweight - limited functionality - websites. I see it as more a matter of spending money to attract new people to the forum and marketplace (also improving quality). Not sure how you would do that - although a blog and forum experts offering advice to new freelancers would certainly be a start.

I can kind of see Dan's point though. Even DigitalPoint forums are filled with spam despite the fact they are still a lot more active than here. I first came to forums to learn when I was just starting. Now it seems there are better ways to learn and there are not many people with more experience than myself who are willing to offer advice on forums (not saying I'm an expert but it seems once people learn the basics they leave the community behind).

Why do we have $400 to spend on a logo, but we can't get the new skin coded.

This site needs to look cooler. The current design looks soooooooooo boring. I don't see why anyone would sign up.

Maybe we need a new forum system. No one really opens vbulletin style forums anymore. I've never been to the sites dan mention but who knows.

We need some good activity. Some good posts, some speedy replies, some designs, and some feedback. The staff doesn't even try to start new threads or do anything.

I do't even know who's on the staff anymore. The staff used to be cool trendy designs/coders who were actively involved on the board/freelancing/design/coding or whatever they did. Not to judge but the staff is so lame here.

For real though, you can work on all the big changes later. In the mean time, just pay someone $300 (or whatever it costs) to code the new forum skin and start creating new threads/writing posts with personality.

There's really not a single thing you can say to justify the lack of improvement/changes going on here.

I don't know why I even wasted my time writing this. this forum is going to be on the same shitty path for the next 5 years until it finally dies

We have Jason from CreativeNine finishing the design at this time. I like how he was able to pick up the pieces and push them forward.

Lemme guess. You now have a new guy working on the theme.

It's closing in on 3 years. It's ridiculous.

Your guess is incorrect. We need a new guy to work on the coding. For reference, see this.
