Old  When is a database too big?

I was just checking the database for talkfreelance and i noticed it's like over 16mbs in size....i was wondering when it becomes "too big", is there a limit on the size of databases or anything?

I'm interested to know the size of your databases (anyone who runs a forum that is)

Theres not really any real limit for databases per se, but disk capacity and hardware limits it.

I think at GU the database about 300MB or something.

I had a 2 Gig Database when I was crawling sites for a Search Engine I'm still working on... I did about 60,000 Sites and the way the Search Engine worked was just too inneffient to search a 2 Gig Database.

But that's MySQL MSSQL would do it better, but I'm affraid even cutting down on information stored, the Database would be bigger than 2 Gigs if we continued and as you all probably know - 2 Gigs of MSSQL costs in the realms of $150-200 A Month... so we'll continue down the MySQL road...

That's why PHPMyAdmin is useless and everybody should use MSSQL.

Of course a database can become to big, Thats when you need to start using dedicated SQL servers that are purley for the databse.

I'm aware of a database on a forum I used to do work for.. That's over 100MB right now.. so 16 isnt close to being at any limit.
