I haven't read the full article, haven't got time only glanced at it so although I can't comment on it I do think this point is very important. Most people add elements to a design just because other sites have them, they'd do a lot better if they knew WHY those elements work, if they knew HOW to use them and most importantly if they knew WHEN to use them.

Jon, while it's a rare commodity at TF from the work that's been posted in the gallery or discussed openly, I don't doubt for a second that the majority of designers here are capable of something close to or equal to what you're outlining in your first post

It's important to remember that designers work is influenced heavily (in most cases) by the client and their tastes, audience requirements and market.

You just gotta have a little faith

Happy Christmas!

there's a massive market for good design, there always will be. another certainty is that 'web 2.0' looks terrible.

if everything was supposed to look like that, i'd quit my job.

Web 2.0 is such a fad, it's so annoying that when something like this comes out, everyone is like "omgozlol" lets design like this and follow everyone else! Be original.

bidjam is right, it is just another fad.

but on the other hand, if people will pay money for it is a profitable fad.

profitable fad or not, it in no way justifies this:

i don't care if he was just trying to be humorable. we have enough conformist douchebags romaing around as it is. we don't need to encourage it.

also,

that's what makes me a designer and not them.

Getting rid of unneeded elements and getting users to focus on the actual content of the site is a fad?

that's not what makes something "web2", that's just good design practice.

web 2 was just a short form for 'i don't design like we did in 1997 when everything was new with spinning gifs'. this design style is a fad, because it's a fad that's evlolved from all the previous ones since 1997 with the gifs. soon enough there'll be a new fad which will be an evolution away from this look.

desing that way if you like it, but it's not the be all end all of good design.
