  Old  on going: vectorthis.com updates

long story short: i've been working on some big projects (hockey.com) that will be going live in march and i'm going to be doing a big update to my portfolio (soon to come). since most of my day is design related in some way, i'm going to set up a design blog in an effort to keep steady traffic coming to my site for when these updates go up, and afterwards.

i want it to be thematically connected to the portfolio design but i don't want it to look like it's all part of the same web site. i like how it looks, but blogs aren't my forte, so i'd appreciate any tips on how to make this better to surf.

cheers.

I don't like the sidebar with the article lists etc, looks a bit too simple.
Rest is looking good.

sled, what do you see in the body column you don't see in the widgets? they're both just black squares. if anything i expected the copy to be too simple.

anyways, the more i've looked at this layout, the more it's bothered me. everything feels offset and i'm trying to mash 2 different ideas into each other.

i've put together what i consider a but more conservative arrangement in terms of layout, but i think overall the flow isn't disrupted the same way. i've also had some colour issues between various monitors concerning contrast.

The design itself is nice apart from that it looks unbalanced once the blue line running along with the navigation runs out.

Your logo tagline is unreadable without moving my head forth from my chair to gaze solely upon it.

The first concept is more interesting if you could find a way to make it work.

Far too dark.

Black text on white is easy to read,

White text on black is hard to read.

i want it to be dark. being primarily dark gives it an edgy feel. look at rbkhockey. i want it to have that intense / new-age association to it. the portfolio i'm working on is also primarily black (for the same reasons) so it's also for consistency's sake.

you're right, white text on black is hard on the eyes, but i've had no problems with the grey on black i've been using on the current site for the last 6 months - so i'll probably fall back to that.

Its a clean layout, a bit too clean I suppose. Also there are a lot of things that don't attract enough attention and have too little details.

The navigation is too simple I believe so I think just a some text-decoration or something that sort would make it a lot better.

Also the transparent container, it distracts because I want to look at the background more then the containers content. Just me though. I think it should be a solid color.

basic interface animation (looks crude because it scales to the browser window size):
