It depends on which terms they want to be highly ranked for. If it's a very general term, like "cooking," it will obviously take a lot of work and thus you should charge more than usual.

If the term is specific, such as "cooking classes in brooklyn," it will not require as much work and thus you should charge less.

There are other factors to consider, such as how many competitors they have (the less competitors, the easier it is to get a good ranking), and how big their site is (obviously the more pages you have to optimize, the more you should charge).

As a base price, I'd start with $400 and work my way up from there, depending on the factors mentioned above. For the keyword "cooking" (or anything just as general) I'd charge $1,000 minimum.

Nothing is guaranteed in the SEO industry.

My SEO charges begin at $500 for basic optimisation. For anything else, payments are determined by the search engine position placement. If clients want page one placements for highly competitive keywords or keyword phrases, then the skys the limit for pricing.

One off, but if the client wishes to maintain their position then they may have to get a maintenance agreement with me.

I see, so for a one off charge, you would.. fix code, add keywords, meta tags, validate etc? How much for a monthly price?

that would depend on, how much time you would need each month and what services you want done. Are you looking for on/off site optimisation, link baiting, link building etc.

There's much more to SEO than on-site optimization. If you expect to rank for a fairly competitive phrase just by adding alt tags, you're really out of luck. No reputable SEO will guarantee a position, no one can control Google. You can attempt to manipulate it but that's about it.
