  Old  2 SEO Questions...

Hi there,

I was wondering if it makes any difference which file extnetions your pages have to SEO? For example, is it better to use .html than .php?

Also, should I be using <h1> and <p> tags? Do they make much difference?

Thanks1

No, file extensions don't make a difference.

<p> tags won't make a difference either because all they do is make a new paragraph.

<h1> might have an impact if you use keywords in them.

I've heard that html is more effective than PHP though?

File extension doesn't make a difference when it looks like this:
page-name.html and page-name.php

however it makes a difference when it's like this
page-name.php?page=name&id=8&product=product-name

because some search engines cannot understand this url. So in this case it would be best to change it to something like
id-product-name.html
or id-product-name.php (doesn't matter which)

and yes <h1> can make a difference <p> cannot. Just don't overuse it.

If domain names matter then why wouldn't the rest of your URL's?

I know that when I'm doing blogging I change the way permalinks are formed so that they show the categories name, as well as being careful as to how I name articles that way it all ends up well in the url.
ex: SEOblogname.com/SEO-Categoryname/SEO-articlename.file

File extension -- NO
<p> -- NO
<h1> -- YES, but use wisely otherwise now a day it may harm you.

You can convert URL's such as .php?query=something into something.php by using a redirect in a .htaccess file It's a bit more friendly to the search engines.

It makes no difference.
Avoid putting your text on the page using flash, the engines can't read it.

Yeah I know MS doesn't do well with variables. page.php?blahblahblah seems to always get cut down to page.php. Well if page.php is just a referrer then it picks up no content at all. My site is designed to send errors on 404's and I get 5-6 a day from microsoft trying to index a nonexistent page because of variables....junk
