I definitely agree with you. But for some reason, I'm finding myself to absolutely love both. I can't get enough of the coding aspects because I love seeing my creations become a working structure, and I also cannot break apart from design creativity. It's just where my life is right now. I'm going to completely master the xHtml/CSS before I even think about moving onto a new language. I believe in my heart that I can do it though.

In my opinion, you should read specified books about CSS&XHTML (you can find alot on internet, or at least in bookstore) and practice. Practice makes perfect. Start with simple things and go forward step by step. And DO NOT start learning from advanced techniques - you'll have more trouble.
As for books, when you'll be more experienced in CSS, I recommend you to read O'Reilly - CSS Cookbook. This book helped me to think different about CSS and after reading this book, I understood, how little I knew.

I'm also learning css/xhtml, I despise parts of it, sometimes it can be fun, I bought a book called "Head First Html With Css & Html", so far I've learned all the basics, I'm on page 150, so I got quite a bit more to go, but so far honestly I feel like there isn't much of a hands on approach on that book, at least not yet.. But the good side to the book is that you actually remember most of what you've learned and you can apply it , anyways good luck!

Just do what you're interested in. If you think, "damn I gotta learn PHP" then go for it. I'm sure there are other reasons leading to why you want to get into that, (maybe you saw some cool script, or you were inspired by another site that might have used php to generate content w/e) but I've always found that if you follow whatever you're interested in, you'll always hit gold.

If you felt good about seeing how code breathed life into your designs than your gonna how programming is gonna add to it. Just get the ball rolling by doing what you want--that momentum will keep you on track and push you to learn even more things you never even thought of.

Trust me it's worked for me. =)
