Skip the books, and start learning at http://www.w3schools.com/php/default.asp

PHP 5 in Easy Steps is a good book.

As for web stuff, stick away from w3schools, they are really only good as a basic reference. www.tizag.com is a great site.

PHP and MySQL Web Development by Welling and Thomson. 800+ pages.

Online tutorials are usually too short. Not saying there aren't some good ones, of course, but if they are substantial enough, they'd be a book, and make a nice income for the author.

I agree with the above comment about w3schools

In my opinion, tutorials aren't that great, unless you're trying to do something specific. Since you're a C/CPP dev, you should easily be able to learn PHP. If you're decent at it, you should just be able to goto the documentation and learn it. They're very similar.

I would also like to know the same thing, which book would be the best start point to learn PHP.

I agree with Dr. John. I actually have that book and it is really well written. I also recommend any books by WROX.

I've started with Larry Ullman's books. It's great but I haven't really read other PHP books other than that so I can't compare.
