Phoenix Zero is on a distinguished road

Old  Beginning to learn ASP.NET - what should I know?

I decided I wanted to learn ASP.NET to create dynamic pages. I know it won't be easy, but I'm dedicated to do it.
  • Is there anything I need to know?
  • What do I need to have?
  • What do I need to install?
  • Do I need a server to practice my code on?
  • How long does it take to learn the basics?
  • What are some good tutorials? I am currently reading W3Schools' tutorial on it. Are there any others?
  • Are there "plug-ins" that can help shorten the writing of the code?
  • How does Adobe Dreamweaver CS3/CS4 do with ASP.NET because that's what I'm going to be using?
  • Which is better? ASP.NET VB or ASP.NET C#?
That's all for now. Feel free to throw ANY additional information in there, anything will help.

Thank you SO MUCH for whoever answers these questions.

Yes the requirements given by the last post are enough. Its your choice whether you would want to use VB or C#,there is no difference in performance or any other parameter.if you know VB 6.0 then VB.Net is the natural progression
for you but if you were working in java earlier then C# is the way to go.

For beginers i think there is not better book than step by step series by microsoft press,it adopts a practical and easy approach.even i learned
asp.net,sql server and ms access using the step by step series.

I recommend a book called "Asp.Net for Web Designers" by Peter Ladka. It is an older book, using .Net 1.2, however, it is a great book for beginners, as it walks you through step by step, with easy to follow tutorials from cover to cover. I used this book to get started, and I have been developing entire .Net sites for about 5 years now.

Really, you don't need the full versions anymore if you can't afford it. Microsoft now has the Express edition software to allow you to develop in .NET.

http://www.microsoft.com/exPress/

This also includes SQL express as well.

Visual studio includes a built in web server for you to test and debug your code. I typically use it to debug, but also like to test with a local IIS version installed as well.

Personally, I find Visual Studio 1000x better for coding .NET than dreamweaver, I would suggest using it instead.

VB vs C# is the never ending debate amoungst .NET developers. Basically, VB is more like english, C# is more like Java. Both are good, pick whichever is easier for you.

It's a good thing that you are going to learn ASP.NET. so,before start learning you have to learn OOP's concept. later it there are different kind of free learning material available on internet for asp.net like w3schools.
The software requirements are visual stdio 2008 ,IIS server. you will have to install them in your PC.

Before begning of Asp.Net
1> you should know oops concept.
2>you have to install visual studio 2008.
3>you should have iis server.
4>There are different online free tutorial available on internet.
5>both VB.Net and c# are best ,selection of language depend on your choice.

Before starting ASP.net few things are really important:
1. Visual Studio 2008/2010 depending on your system performance.
2. Sql Server 2008
3. No server is need new Visual studio.
4. For web development use C# and software development VB
5. learn from www.asp.net, lynda training video VTC for learning.
