  Old  Thoughts on New Site

Good Day Everyone,

I am currently in the process of looking to create a website. I have created html sites before but never used a site builder. The reason for using a site builder would be that the customer who has requested a site would prefer to maintain the site once created because of it being simpler for them.

With that said what do you recommend for Web Hosting?
What do you recommend for a Site Builder?
And how much different in prices is there to create a site that is created with a site builder compared to building a site with say dreamweaver and photoshop?

If using a site builder who owns the website?

Your input is greatly needed and appreciated. Thank you

If you're using a site builder it's not web development. Those are toys for executives, not tools for professionals. I'd personally refuse a project where they want me to use a WYSIWIG so they can maintain it afterwards; there is nothing wrong with needing to come back to a specialist to complete special needs. Moves like that indicate excessive cheapness, always a red flag when working with clients.

As for a web host, if they don't want you involved after the fact just find one that comes with a site builder feature. I'm not familiar with any that do this but I know they are out there. I'm guessing that they will jump for whatever opportunity saves them a penny so go by price if that's what matters.

Whatever they want you to do just charge your normal hourly rate.

Thank you Village Genius,

May I ask what you use to build your sites? And where do you host your sites?

So if a client wants a site builder used so that they can maintain the site, but dont want to worry about adding all the contents to the site, that's why they ask me, then instead of coming up with a package fee such as site builder wants 10 main pages with unlimited sub pages charge them x amount of dollars, your saying to charge them by hour for putting the contents on the site? What about if they need photo's watermarked still charge per hour?

One client has requested homestead, have you heard of this web hosting site?

I look forward to every ones input. Thank you

I build them using notepad++, I don't do much HTML these days though. I host most of my stuff on Liquidweb (I don't manage the hosting for my clients), they cost more than their competitors but their quality is pretty much unmatched.

If they want your time it should cost them. You can make packages for set pricing but base them off of what you'd expect to be charging if it were hourly.

I'm aware of Homestead, they seem like a decent option if they want to manage things. It is designed for people who know nothing of websites.

Thanks Again Village Genius,

I was wondering if a site is built with a site builder,
Does that company own the site or does the client?

Who owns a site once it is built? Hosting Company?

Thanks Again.

When you say they want to maintain it themselves, what do you mean exactly? If all they want is to be able to add more content you could always set them up with a CMS.

I'd stay away from many of the SiteBuilder type scripts. Most of the time the templates they offer are so cheezy that your client will not be happy.

Rather than re-invent the wheel, why not look at the Content Management System such as Drupal or Wordpress. We have built hundreds of sites for clients using Wordpress for the simple fact that once we're done, the client can maintain all the content, upload pictures and create additional pages if needed.

I'm a huge Wordpress fan, and as a result, most of our clients are now Wordpress fans too. The content is 100% yours and can move to pretty much any of the hosting companies out there. SiteBuilders are often tied to hosts using that particular sitebuilder, and sometimes, depending on the host, you can't even get a backup of it!
