I have the XFX Geforce 6600 and it works great so getting the XFX 6800 is a good choice

Sure, ots a pretty low-end card but should have no problems runing the game at reasonable enough settings.

FATAL, whats the general consensus on hardware forums about which is the best out of those two specific cards? Or are they a bit varied aswell..

It'll run Half-Life 2 on medium to high, you just won't be able to do any HDR with it. Personally though, I would of bought the 6800 since it supports shader model 3.0. The next generation games will be using it. Still a good buy though.
