Old  26 Useful Tips and Tricks for Freelancers

We just published up a list of '26 Useful Tips and Tricks for Freelancers' for all you guys here at Talkfreelance who visit Freelancer Magazine.

Freelancing is by no means easy. You are given responsibility of your own future, your own earnings, to choose who and what you want to work for; but this responsibility comes with a whole set of unique challenges in itself. You’re in charge of your own future, so if you make a mistake, you’re the only one to blame. You dictate your earnings, so it’s up to you to hunt down clients and make sure you’ve got a consistent cash flow. These are but a few of typical freelancer’s worries...

Not a bad post on the whole, but a few things that I thought were a bit odd.

Try not to use email.
Try not to use email?! Eh? Email is a great method of communication, and then weirdly you say:

9) Signatures. It’s also useful to include a signature with necessary contact information including a URL to your online portfolio (if you have one) under every email you send out to your clients.
So now we do use email? Lol

Also be careful: it's as if you're pitching for this FreshBooks thing. 5 links? It's as if you based your post around it. It's also the only site you externally link to in the whole post. Add some variety!

But yeah, pretty good post on the whole.

Thanks Seb. What I actually meant was don't use email too much for daily client contact, try to use some kind of ticketing system. Further on I'm then referring to just general emails you send out, not necessarily to clients although I did say that. (Looks like I've got some editting to do!)

I'm going to take out 3 of the freshbooks links too, it's not needed - I just thought about putting them after I had published the article.

Thanks for the feedback mate.

No problem - I don't mean to criticize, just to be constructive

The reason I don't like email much is nowadays people have so much mail they forget to respond half the time, or they respond very late.

That's why I see the best form of communication with clients is via a ticket system.

Wouldn't a ticket system rely upon email notification of when a new response is made though?

It would, but, it's much easier to have a habit of checking a ticketing system with an entire list of the conversation - that way it makes it easier to keep track of everything and respond easily.

I have to disagree on that point too, i find email much easier to keep track of than using a ticketing system or project management system like ProjectPath. Any time i've hired designers and had to use a system like that, it frustrates me rather than makes my life easier.
