In order to be successful online, you have to have both content and backlinks. You can't really have one without the other. I don't see how could someone be successful only with content and no link building campaign or vice versa...

Keep in mind though, that a website should be build for the human visitors, that is potential customers, and not the search engines. Follow the search engine quality guidelines and you will do just fine.
