Actually people did use C a lot on the web in CGI programming but now there's things like PHP/Perl, etc that are much more faster for the web and built specifically for the web.

Personally I love C++. It's probably one of the best languages out there. Very nicely organized and structured.

I've used C a lot too but I haven't touched it in over 5 years but I know my C++ so it won't be too hard to pick up.

I plan to use it to build an Apache module. Apache was written with it and so was PHP...so hopefully I can make myself a PHP module and extend PHP as well heh heh

I was required to learn C++ and some C for a few certs. C++ is quite the language to go with depending on what you are doing..however, I wouldn't suggest it for webdesign.. And in my opinion, C is just to damn massive.

Learning C++ can actually help you with other languages like PHP, JavaScript, Java, etc since they all derive their styles from C++ which in turn came from C.

Java is a bit easier than C/C++ because it handles memory for you although you can still manually handle memory in Java.

Languages like PHP, ASP, etc all handle the memory for you, but that's because it is scripting, not real programming. When it comes to real programming, you would have to usually manually handle memory allocation and deallocation.

Some people work with scripting languages like PHP, JavaScript, etc and call themselves programmers but actually, they are just scripters.

If you get the chance to learn C/C++, JUMP at it. It will teach you a **** load of things about programming and you will be able to grasp other concepts in programming of other languages very easily.

If you do apply for a job as a programmer somewhere and your resume says that you've worked with C/C++ extensively, that will carry a LOT of weight.

:edit:
FYI, C++ is just C with OOP (Object Oriented Programming or methodology).
C++ was the result of an OOP based language merging with C...if I remember correct, it was a Finnish guy who was trying something out for his college project and came up with this whole OOP concept. God bless him

On a scale of 1-10, for a person just learning php, how hard would c++ be to learn. Also, how usefull would it be to me?

C/C++ itself is not that hard to learn, it's getting round the different API's that is harder IMO.

C++ is actually a bit tricky when it comes to memory handling. Even the experts have problems there :/

You don't need to purchase anything to use C++. There are some free compilers out there.

I do EVERYTHING in C.

From Website coding to forms, Content Management, shopping cart. As I said I do EVERYTHING in C. Since I developed my own libraries and content management system I now find it so much quicker to just write things in C.

I combine it with PHP - pages are in PHP and the page is just full of html and multiple calls to one single C propgram - that has under it many other C programs. Its all part of my self developed and designed Dman Website Manager Software. Its a HUGE program - hundreds of pages long and my entire website runs on it. I'm very proud of it
