You can also try lynda.com They have quicktime tutorials that are pretty good. You can view some sample ones for free to see if they meet your learning style.

First learn the basics from a book/guide, then look for the php tutorials (pixel2life.com, good-phptutorials.com) on the web.

I'd recommend buying a book as well. O'Reilly is nice. Something about having a book sitting next to your laptop as you learn a new language is irreplaceable - sifting through online tutorials is a pain in the ass.

Everyone learns differently. I learn fast by getting in over my head, and then digging my way out. If you're like me, choose a project, write down your goals, and just get to work.

If you learn better with mentorship and guidance, hooking up with a seasoned PHP developer or taking a formal course might be the quickest route for you.

Either way, Google is your friend. php.net is your friend. Use HTML-Kit or something with an integrated FTP browser so you don't waste precious time screwing with FTP - just edit on the fly off your Web server.

You should at least have a good understanding of HTML & CSS to produce usable PHP scripts.

Nothing beats experience.
I've recently started learning PHP.. and one thing I must say is..

Be consistent. If you're going to learn PHP, don't take long breaks in the middle.. all it does is break your tempo

I don't recommend (or atleast, I don't prefer) books, since they are static. PHP changes fast... books don't

I learnt my HTML/XHTML/CSS from w3schools... that is exactly where I am picking up the PHP basics from, as of now.

Also, if you already know Javascript.. then PHP should be easy enough for you, since there are some similarities between the two..

Hi

The best way i found to get into a programming language was to firstly think of an idea you would like to create (website, application etc). Then buy a decent book and scan through it to get an idea of where to start. Then when you start building your application, learn what you need to accomplish the task.

I basically read about a topic only when i needed to use it. It will take quite a while to get your first application up and working, but obviously you will become quicker with more experience.
