Wordpress needn't be limited to being used for just blogs. Thanks to its easy templating system and simple Plugin API, I use it for other purposes as do many others.

Urgh, lets just make this clear. Wordpress is a CMS ("personal publishing platform") aimed at being used for weblogs. Out-of-the-box that is what it is meant to do. However, with modifications it can easily cater for other styles of websites.

WordPress is simple. If you are just going to be writing articles, making news posts, and adding a couple pages you could probably get by with using it.

Otherwise you are going to have to use a more advanced CMD. Mambo is pretty nice, but I'm not sure how well the development of it is going to progress since the dev team quit Mambo and started Joomla (http://www.joomla.com/).

Another one that is really advanced and IMHO has a better skinning system and an easier plugin system is Drupal. Maybe large sites such as spreadfirefox.com and thisweekintech.com use Drupal, it is really scalable.

Of course if you want to be old school you could always just put up a copy of PHP/Post Nuke

Its really just personal preference and what you are comfortable with.

Cheers

It really depends on it's use. If you're wanting functionality you will choose a different CMS than if you were focused on web standards and usability. Each to their own.

I have personally never used a free cms, ive always built my own. Its pretty difficult to start with but thats how I started out with php and it gave me a really good footing.
