This is also why I can't stand Vanilla. I think it was a great attempt to try to introduce change and a creative look for forums but we are already so accustomed to a standard that the change is a negative aspect.

I feel it's more crowded and disorganized with Vanilla than say IPB, vB or MyBB.

If I had to go opensource, I'd only ever go with MyBB. My paid solution is and has always been IPB!
