It's simple all right and you certainly are correct that the ads definitely ruin it (it makes it have a look that says "help, I'm squished!" though that's not really your fault at all). It's pretty easy on the eyes, though the best way to get rid of those ads may be to start the layout from the top rather than the middle. Also, I think the content text should be different in some way to make it stand out more as it really blends in with the ads too much that I almost didn't know it was the content.

reminds me of my blogs design, in the sense of the lighter part is outside of the main content, and it uses that shadow affect also.
