Photo resolution

Hi,
My Nikon D40X camera output some large JPG image (5120x3427px). I want to store the photos in my catalog (iphoto or google picasa) to show for friends. But I think, I need to reduce the resolution because each photo take much space (17-20MB/photo).. Which resolution you use to store your photos on hdd ?
