just question!

i trying to rub the top of a shape off, its is adding more to the shape instead of removing the top! Its as though it is acting as a brush instead of a rubber!

You're erasing the mask, so it's showing up the image underneath the mask.

so you are drawing on a mask. its kinda like a hidden layer on top of the layer you are working on.

with the mask (the black box immediately to your right of the layer) selected:

with black selected you will "hide" the layer.

with white selected you will "un-hide" the layer.

because none of us bothered to actually make sure: slick on the layer box - de-selecting the mask layer.
