Old  My computer's sudden epidemic of blotchy gradients.

It seems like about 1 - 2 months ago anything I worked on with gradients in it kept getting blotchy when re-opening the file. I don't know what's going on, but it's become really frustrating. Things like clouds and skylines are getting especially distorted. I save the file at 16 bits/channel, and then re-open it to find it's 8 bits and full of ugly blotches. This problem didn't exist all that long ago and wonder what could be causing this. Anyone know?

I have experienced unwanted image compression on my 3G mobile device, but this is not the case here as I see. What format are your troubled images? All formats? That may help determine the cause.
