if u have a Mac, i think iMovie should be good, but if u want to go advanced then Final Cut Pro Express, unless u got alot of money to spend then Final Cut Pro

and for Windows, Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas are great also.

also i heard Avid is good too and one of the programs used by professionals

What industry is that? The one in his bedroom making 5 min films? Wherever you go that creates feature films or basic television shows, they'll be using either an Avid system or a Mac using the Final Cut Studio.

I've used sony vegas quite a lot and it's a great piece of software, a lot easier to get on with than adobe premier in my opinion.
