Anyone got a good method for preventing collapsing margins for layout elements?

I use a .clearfix method, by giving all elements of a wrapper div a set height, with floating, prevents anything from being trodden over.

Agreed.

However, if you'd consider a huge monitor (like a 30 inch mammoth), and compare that to a smaller screen (lets say 17 inches)....you'd realize that there would be a lot of difference in the overall experience (of course size matters)..but the general ratio of Empty space to the space taken up by the design elements would come into play.

easy fix: Elements with Border-top do not collapse their top margins.

harder fix: Read the standard:
