Right. I simply see eye to eye with what Blue Ire said in his last post. Just because certain coders here are favored as they have the time to take on a lot of coding work (where as I have a full time web development job so my freelance time is limited) and they produce good work for clients that may not necessarily know any better (as they're not coders themselves), it doesn't mean that person has the qualifications to judge what code is better than other code.

No hacks are needed if you know what you're doing. I won't be competing if hacks are allowed.

While that would be fantastic, good luck getting that organized...

Out of a primarily web design and coding base of how many users, thousands? I find it hard to believe that there aren't appropriately qualified people who can judge from within the community itself. Hell, I'd put my hand up and offer my time and expertise for this contest -- but you have seen nothing of my ability to code a template so who knows if I'd be allowed.
I'm really against the whole timed thing -- it's really an irrelevant factor (so long as the finished piece is in before the deadline) in my eyes. If anyone wants to draft up a set of guidelines for the judging, let me know and I'll give my own thoughts.
Design-off? Well, go set one up if it's such a good idea.

I want to see both a design off and a code off. If you guys manage to get everything set, and manage to advertise the word out to other forums and places, I would be interested in sponsoring it with a sexy prize. =D

Hey, that chocolate underwear is made by Lindor, it's a good prize to have in this sort of situation.

This is a great idea for an informal contest! Don't bog it down in rules, and have simple and clear judging criteria, and it'll work. Also scrap the timing aspect, that would be far too difficult to judge.
