I think it would help to not just read other people's articles but choose the quality ones. Also learn one new word per day so you can use it in your future articles but bear in mind that you should use words that are understood by many than different words that are not understandable. Readers might ignore your write -ups if this will be the case without considering its thought.

Learning any new skill is best achieved with a balance of learning and doing. One or the other will not cut it. What you learn becomes a part of your skill set only when you use it.

So I would recommend two things. First, write as much as possible. Second, read as much as possible, including books about writing as well as general literature. Reading improves diction and gives you a feel for expression. In particular, writing books furnish methodology and offer general writing tips.

But until you write, no improvement will take place. It's one of the most rewarding pursuits known to man. Have fun!

I think making yourself an active user on a forum can help greatly in writing skills. I suggest finding a forum which suits your interests, and really putting some time into your posts there.

I'd add: be your own harshest critic. Challenge the meaning and position of every word and sentence you use. If you're unwilling to do this for yourself, partner with another writer who will exchange with you. Or read and record what you've written,* and listen to the recording.

It is a myth that everyone can open a document, write 500 words, run spell- and grammar-check (and perhaps run the piece through plagiarism software) and the result is sufficient. These tools do not address clarity, focus, appropriate language, etc.

Yes, some people can sit down and write perfect, or even good enough prose. But, based on 20+ years of experience as an editor, writer and writing teacher, I'd say most people can't.

*0.5 second pause at each sentence end. Breath at each comma. Breath and slight pause at each colon or semi-colon. And so forth.

Hello Mark

In my opinion, it is essential to know your subject. This is crucial, when you know the subject it becomes easy for you to play with words in order to create an impressive post. Another very important thing is the density of keywords. Appropriate use of keywords makes the post powerful and it also helps in terms of getting good ranking in the search engines.
