There is no better resource than having a good book. PHP is not hard to learn, but it is also not very easy to understand. A book will take you far....

Well, a lot of beginners starting to learn PHP (like me), we don't take the time to go through what each function/command/variable does and we just go straight to the part where they show you the code to do a certain thing. And then, they end up not knowing what they just inputted. =\
