Old  So I'm making a gaming community...

...and I don't have a way to start my website. If you are wondering what I am talking about, I want to start a community/website like IGN.com, or any other gaming site. Now, I want to start it with a "platform". What I mean is, I want to use something you install to the web server e.g. "vBulletin, Wordpress, Social Engine, Joomla, etc.". What should I use?

Go for wordpress mate, makes it very easy.

Next thing is you can either buy a theme, make a theme, or pay someone to make a theme for you.

If you wanna experiment with some themes, I recommend buying black aperature and imperial ---- http://mattbrett.com/marketplace/

For a gaming website I would recommend either Joomla! or Expression Engine.

Do you want to include a community alongside with your site? Then you'll definitely want to look into WordPress + BuddyPress + IPB.

This is exactly how I setup my website (it's a niche gaming/tech review/etc) to run. I restarted it several times getting frustrated with how I wanted things to work out. Initially I figured I would do BBPress (or whatever the WordPress forum was) but I didn't like. I'm a forum kind of person and have always preferred IPB.

So mine is heavily customized to utilize WordPress, BuddyPress and IPB. You'll also want to get a design done for your site because there are really no themes that are BuddyPress compatible nor are any of the BuddyPress themes that nice anyway.

Sebech's example is nice but.. you want to stand out from the crowd--not look like other websites out there.
