Some hosters need the index file to index.htm and not index.html
older systems accept only 3 fig extension
that is true
also some software like frontpage automatically add .htm extension and not .html.
must be for backward compatibility
i dont know any other reason.

[QUOTE=Koobi]In some older machines/OS's the set length for an extension was 3 characters if I'm not mistaken. It just matters on the old servers, doesn't really matter anymore.QUOTE]

I agree

yeah that's true but that is usually because of the way they have configured their server.

for example, if you use apache, your config file would be either httpd.conf (if you use Apache v1.x) or apache2.conf (if you use Apache v2.x) and those can define which files to accept as the index files.

typically, that partciular line in the config file looks like this:
Code:
DirectoryIndex index.html index.cgi index.pl index.php index.xhtml

My understanding was that in the old days (around '96/'97) the Unix based servers only accepted .html while MS based servers only accepted .htm.

I don't know why or how true this is, just some info I was given by the systems guru I worked with at the time.

There isn't any difference.

They just had to find a three-letter extension for html files so it will be compatible with all systems.
