It all depends on the purpose. I paid $300 for my portfolio design (one page), but wouldn't go over $50 on my old image hosting site design.

As VI said, depends totally on what you may be getting.
I can see myself paying in excess of $250-300 for a large based design with multiple pages.
For simple proxy/image host designs, would try to not go over $100. (Again depending on complexity, how many pages etc.)

For a simple one page template I'll probably be willing to pay around $100 max. For a large design including many pages I would be prompted to pay up to $350.

This mainly depend on the complexity of the design, whether its a simple and clean or there's alot of details in it. Another factor is whether the designer is skilled.

agree with lenormand , for design maximum 250 $ because you need to get it coded too.

well it depends on the designer and project.
Example If you hired me = not advertisement just an example
I dont have skills compared to aftermath,netspiel or anthony
so me charging you the same prices as those talented guys and you thought I was on crack.
For just a one page design
Now If you hired me = again not advertisement
I would do like 4 pages for there price but then again Im not on the same skill level as them
