WYSIWYG editors, what's really wrong with them?

I just per fer absolute control, plus, Notepad 2 + Firefox are less demanding than dreamweaver, so I can keep photoshop open as well

Nothing is wrong with WYSIWYG editors, it's all a matter of preference and your skill in using them. Simple as that.

Can someone tell me what's so great about WYSIWYG editors like DreamWeaver.
Like, what particular functions of it do you use? Basically when I code I only need the following:

• Syntax highlighting
• Line numbers
• Auto indent
• An easy way to work with multiple files

It depends on how serious you want to be about your coding and what levels you aspire to.

If you only ever use a WYSIWYG then you will be in trouble when something goes wrong - and it will - as you won't know how to fix it.

I'm employed full-time as a CSS/XHTML 'guru' so it would be bad for me to use a WYSIWYG however I do still use the split view of DW when creating HTML e-mails as they still require crappy code to work across as many platforms as possible.

Lol, you're right about html emails requiring crappy coding to work properly

i actually like using dreamweaver for coding, it helps with php functions (cant possibly remember the variables of all the functions), im used to the color coding, and if it shows right in dreamweaver, its usually done pretty good...u'd be surprised how much it can help when ur doing cross platform and os checking

WYSIWYG are quite dirty. The code is not needed and full of garbage. It hinders your rankings, your listing on google, and your overall credibility as a site, especially if you have a site that is dedicated to getting clients. Also, it doesn't always show up correctly in browsers, like Firefox or Netscape. Another problem is if you ever want a more sophistacted page, like with users or credit card payments, WYSIWYG's can't do them for you. That is why it is best to branch out and learn coding.

It takes a lot of time, but it is definately worth it. Then you can go free lance and make quite a bit. I just landed a $1000 deal the other day.

I haven't use any WYSIWYG editor for a very long time, I'm coding html in notepad and css sometime with notepad and sometime with style master 4.

I use these editors most of the time... Only because it is faster for me than it is to hand code. I have no problem creating fully valid code in these editors. It's just a matter of mastering these programs.

PS: I say these because at home I use the lastest dreamweaver, at my workstation number 1 I use golive CS2 and on my mac workstaion I use an older dreamweaver
