I did the exact change after i was pestered by friends to get firefox, i do like the tab idea and i would strongly recommend it to others

Good for you! To clarify your question, just play around with the tab options until you find something that fits your needs.

If you go into options you can make every link that opens a new window become a tab and the scroll wheel on the mouse opens a new tab when clicked on links.

if you hold CTRL when clicking link it will open in new tab even if it is target=blank

You can Firefox open target="_blank" as explained before, but only in 1.5 I think.
