Other than the renewed focus on high quality content and relevant links, has there been changes to the onpage SEO factors that we should be aware of?

The best way to learn how to actually do SEO is to test all the theories you can find out there. Learning what works and what doesn't on your own is a great experience. That is how you become a good SEO!
