Old  Where to learn about div's and tableless coding?

Hey

I've been reading through the beginners tutorials on xhtml and css on www.htmldog.com and was kind of disappointed when i realized they don't explain div's and stuff at all there, they barely mentioned the word "div"...
So i need to know guys, where is the best place for a beginner to learn about tableless coding and divs (yeah they are the same, whatever).

Thanks in advance,
Jake

tableless doesn't mean div. i've coded full sites without either a table or a div - the design' wasn't anything special, but the point stands.

the best place to learn is just screwing around on your own; make a div. add attributes to it, see how it changes. add more see how the play off each other.

Theres not really much to explain about divs. This is how I look at them, imagine divs/css/xhtml as a giant egg roll. The divs are all the little attributes and defining material inside the egg roll (the div name), once you combine the two and put them into the oven (xhtml) they come out working fine together. I personally thought they defined it pretty well in the Intermediate sections of both css/xHTML, but I guess everyone learns different. You can always check out w3cschools if you can't find it anywhere else...

Yes, div is just a block style element like p. All CSS attributes they mention on HTMLDog will style a div.

If you really are serious about learning, read a few tutorials and get straight into experimentation. You can read all the coding tutorials on the internet but you won't learn anything if you don't practice and experiment with what you have learned. View the source of websites with tableless coding and try to edit and adapt their code to make your own website. That's basically how I learned.

Ok guys, thanks for the advice, but i was more wondering how divs are created and what stuff to use with them (like class and id). I want to know HOW to use it and so on.

Thanks,
Jake

Two great books:

Advanced CSS Mastery [amazon]
HTML Uptopia: Designing without tables [sitepoint]

--------
Thing to understand is - divs can be just as worse as tables if they are over used. And when that happens its usually when the person is still unsure about the advanced aspects of CSS (imo).

I went straight to hands on.. never read any tutorials or books, a little bit of help from good friends but like its always said, practice makes perfect.
I've coded around 8 websites in tableless coding, and my latest 2 that i'm working on are the best i've done.

You'll get better and better as you go along.. just practice, thats all i can say.
