I would suggest a basic cms with a admin panel and a front end.

I disagree, a CMS is a combination of pretty much every programming concept mashed together. While it seems to be the popular thing to advise, this is not suitable for a beginner who is just learning each concept. Putting the concepts together will really only be useful for someone who already knows each concept.
If you are a beginner, think of a practical use for each concept you just learned. You may have a to learn a thing or two more to complete that particular application but that is OK. Once you've learned everything then you might benefit form trying to make a CMS, but even then I think it is a complete waste of time.

VG, while the overall CMS might be a big mash up of programming concepts, often there are clearly discrete and with a CMS you are able to start small and build upon it, learning each concept as you go. It is not necessarily a bad thing to be thrown into the deep end, either...

Minesweeper
In my intro to PHP class, our professor had us write minesweeper.
I found there was a fair amount of logic, as well as the use of sessions, some math, etc.
I liked it as a beginner project. It got me comfortable with a lot of the essentials. POST & GET variables, sessions, error checking, calculating when a user has won/lost, multi dimensional arrays, etc etc

My very first project was Hello World. I did it with BASIC and Pascal eons ago.
The first projects I made in PHP is setting up a webpage with the formats of the fonts. Then I arrange the fonts then the background of the webpage. We then started programming by making a simple calculator as was told by Chris.

My first PHP script was a guestbook that used a file to store the data. Later I converted it to use MySQL. After that project I started to love PHP and coded much larger projects like a CMS.

This thread made me wonder, can do complex programs with PHP alone or do we need a more flexible programming language? I'm thinking about nested loops or cases.
