Chances are that if you are dissatisfied with photoshop's abilities you are either impossible to please or just don't know how to use photoshop. As far as design and image editing goes photoshop is the standard, there is no more featured tool.

I don't think you can get any better tool other than Photo shop. Its the best tool for designing purpose. You don't need to follow any book.Simple you can start and very easily you can capture it.I use it for my designing purpose and also I always recommend this for others.

I agree with Madhusmita. Photoshop is the best. I have used Fireworks because my friend said it's great, but I prefer Photoshop.

Try Adobe Dreamweaver. It has all those basic options built in, but to do more complex things you may need learn some basic HTML. You could probably google the code for anything specific you want though, it would help to know these basic things.

Adobe Photoshop is obviously very popular, and, thus most people would say it is the best. It does have a lot of features that will aid you in webdesign, and so it's really awesome. I use it for all of my needs, but I've tried to use Illustrator and InDesign for webdesign and it worked well, but Photoshop is probably the best choice.

I agree with Village Genius - Photoshop is definitely the standard.

Don't concentrate on study a various types of Software for design. This is a bad idea. Don't search an ideal program with which you will do an awesome designs in a few steps. This program didn't exist. Just select one, that you like (for me: Photoshop) and learn how to work with it. Not import what tool you will use, matter what you can do with it.
P.S. Search on youtube what other peoples draw in MS Paint and you will understand that tool didn't matter.

Photoshop is definitely the cream of the crop. If you are unhappy with Photoshop, why not try Coral Draw? It's been many years since I have tinkered with Coral Draw, but it might be what you are looking for
