web 2 was just a short form for 'i don't design like we did in 1997 when everything was new with spinning gifs'. this design style is a fad, because it's a fad that's evlolved from all the previous ones since 1997 with the gifs. soon enough there'll be a new fad which will be an evolution away from this look.

Not really.

how so? ajax was a big push forward in terms of what you can do with a web page. today's pages (regardless of technology) compared to the first generation publisher like pages way back when, it's like working in a different universe. web2 makes perfect sense, it's like a second coming, but it's not a "style". glossy plastic is a style.
designers just stole it.

There's an assumed design style for Web 2.0, and I think that's what you're trying to negatively push your opinion into for us (of course, nothing wrong with that). I guess Web2 is a name that simply defines functions of good standards design and foundation (not specifically graphics design, aka Photoshop templates).

Very nice article Ben, I am impressed at the detail you have gone into and the inclusion of all references. Thank you.
I was particularly pleased to see this quote that I love:
"It seems that perfection is reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,
Terre des hommes, 1939

Keep up the good work Ben!

yes, i hate that (assumed) style - it has its places but i don't understand why it's so popular. most times it's clunky and cheaply built and actually goes against its purpose.
just for the record, i'm not knocking the article, i'm knocking the idea that designing to this assumed web2.0 trendy style automatically gives your work all these attributes.

There we go, well everyone has an opinion and that's their right.
On another not, I read the article a few days ago as well off of Digg, and thought it was very interesting and good to read. Thanks for writing it, you did a good job Ben.

I think the topic should be changed to:

Nobody said that "all web 2.0 trendy style automatically gives your work all these attributes". Of course you can have a ****ty "web 2.0" design, just like how you can with any other style, but that's not relevant to what the article talked about. It's talking about good, simple, design practice. I think that he mentioned "web 2.0" is throwing everyone for a loop.

Yah, I noticed, he doesn't think about what he says anymore, like how he commented on my Digg, he must not have the holiday spirit.
I'm going to second Anthony's comment.
