Do you want to code or template? Big difference :P One you'll have to only know html/css and go through the built in stuff, otherwise you'll need to know PHP

I've thought about looking into building forums myself...wanting the advantages of vB, but free like proboards. Not that proboards isn't okay...or forumcircle, but I'd love to just been able to code the whole thing myself.

Really, it's all just a bunch of tables and links, correct? I mean, alot of other stuff have to interface to make a forum really a forum, but I suppose it all depends, like Jream said, on what you want to do.
